Learn to Perform Chinese Opera - Percussion, Fiddle or Flute

The vibrant forms of Kunqu and Jingju come to London this Autumn in a 10-week course of evening workshops in Chinese Opera percussion and instruments held in SOAS. Percussion is open to anyone with a good sense of rhythm and a liking for loud noise! You will learn all the basic rhythmic patterns on gongs and cymbals, and how to respond to the directions of the drum master (gushi).

Chinese fiddle (erhu) and flute (dizi) are open to students with relevant instrumental experience, ie. bowed or wind instruments of any tradition. You will learn to play arias from the ‘Peony Pavilion’, the Chinese opera performance style, and how to accompany the actors on stage.

The workshops will be led by top performers and teachers of the London Jing Kun Opera Association. They will include introductions to Chinese music, to the art of Chinese opera, and DVD viewing of opera scenes.
